The Center for the Management of Information Technology hosted two exciting programs during the spring semester. The Darden School was the site of the March 5, 2004, meeting, “Enterprise Systems Integration,” which featured presentations by two CIOs who are responsible for the largest public and private sector integration initiatives ever attempted.

Steve Cooper, CIO of the Department of Homeland Security.
First, Steve Cooper, CIO of the Department of Homeland Security, described the challenges of integrating information across numerous databases and sprawling governmental agencies. Later, Dana Deasy, CIO of Tyco International, talked about the challenges inherent to integrating the thousands of disparate systems necessary to run the Tyco’s complex and rapidly changing operation.

The afternoon session explored the architecture behind enterprise systems integration, featuring presentations by Paul Strassmann, former CIO of the Department of Defense, NASA, and Xerox Corporation, and Walt Smith, Chief Architect of the Federal Reserve.

Aligning IT with Business Strategy
The Virginia Housing Development Authority in Richmond was the site of April 27, 2004, program, which looked at ways to align IT with business strategy. “Most companies are disappointed in the returns generated by their IT investments,” said Jeanne W. Ross, Principal Research Scientist at MIT’s Center for Information Systems Research.

The problems, she believes, stem mostly from poor governance, specifically, putting decision-making responsibility for IT in the hands of the wrong people. The session reviewed research on how 256 enterprises govern IT—and how their various governance approaches lead to different results. In addition, Ross presented practical frameworks for designing IT governance consistent with business strategy.
