Robert Musselman •
Former McIntire School of Commerce and Law School faculty member Robert Musselman (A&S ’34, Master’s ’40, Law ’45) died Nov. 9, 2004, at the age of 90. Musselman had degrees in German, political science, and law, and while at the University, he served as editor-in-chief of College Topics (now The Cavalier Daily). He remained active in his firm, Robert M. Musselman and Associates, until his death. His wife, Carolyn Clarke Musselman (McIntire ’52, Law ’56), also practices law and accounting with the firm.

From 1936 to 1959, Musselman taught at the Law School and the McIntire School. He also was the University’s Chief Accountant during World War II. Not only did he teach accounting to generations of McIntire and University students, he hired many of them over the years at his firm and was a mentor to many young attorneys and accountants.

As a faculty member, Musselman supervised the master’s theses of such University and McIntire luminaries as Ray C. Hunt, who taught on the McIntire faculty and later served as the University’s Vice President of Finance and Chief Operating Officer (1967–1990), and Frank S. Kaulback, first Dean of McIntire School of Commerce (1955–1977).

According to Charlottesville, Va.’s Daily Progress, Musselman was admitted to practice before courts in numerous jurisdictions, including the U.S. Supreme Court. He frequently appeared before the U.S. Tax Court, a number of whose judges he had taught.

In 1997, he received the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Outstanding Member Award for his years of service on the society’s board and committees. He was also recognized for more than 50 years of service to the Virginia State Bar Association and to the Psi Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity.
He was an active member of the Democratic Party, serving as a delegate to the State Convention. As an election official, he served as the chief officer for his precinct for more than 50 years.

He was also a member of the American Association of Attorney—Certified Public Accountants, the Thomas Jefferson Society, the Raven Society, the American Philatelic Society, and Church of Our Saviour.

In addition to his wife of 46 years, Carolyn, Musselman is survived by daughter Susan Musselman Norfleet (McIntire ’86) and her husband, Alan, of Richmond, Va., and two grandchildren, Kelly and Jason Norfleet.
