The 21st century has been greeted with both promise and peril. Along with many bright possibilities come terrorism, new health hazards such as SARS, corporate scandals, and market meltdowns. For many, the increased level of global geopolitical complexity means more risk and uncertainty. But are we really living in a more risky world? What’s the reality of such perils? What’s the reality of the situation for both individuals and businesses?
The Sixth Annual Spring Symposium, “Living Dangerously?: Risk in the 21st
Century,” to be held April 15, 2005, in the University’s Old Cabell Hall, will explore these topics as well as the potential for new risks, both expected and unforeseen. The event, which will expand on the stimulating but unresolved discussions emanating during the 2004 spring symposium, particularly with regard to the general topic of risk in a global age, will feature renowned panel participants and speakers
CEO of Tyco International
Ed Breen, Author and Harvard Professor Niall Ferguson, President and Founder of Blue Ridge Capital
John Griffin (McIntire ’85), Manager of the legendary Tiger Management
Julian Robertson, Author and Yale Dean and Professor James Gustave Speth, Managing Director of TA Associates
Richard Tadler (McIntire ’78), and Vice Chairman of JPMorgan Chase
Jeffrey Walker (McIntire ’77).
“The McIntire School and the University are taking a leading role in bringing together preeminent scholars and practitioners to share their unique expertise and managerial insights with our students, faculty, and alumni,” says George Overstreet, Associate Dean for Research and Center Development.
The symposium is planned by The McIntire Center for Financial Innovation, the Center for Growth Enterprises, and the Center for the Management of Information Technology. Held
the day before the start of Historic Garden Week in Virginia, the event also
precedes the afternoon meetings of the McIntire Foundation Board, the McIntire Advisory Board,
the McIntire Cornerstone Board, and the McIntire Young Alumni Council.
