Brooke Hardin
Randall ’80, age 47, of Matthews, N.C., died, July 14, 2006.
She was born Aug. 26, 1958, in Roanoke, Va., daughter of the
late Walter Reade Hardin Jr. and Mary Holland Hardin. The 1976
graduate of Blacksburg High School attended Sweet Briar College
and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1980. Brooke
was very active in her community with local schools and local
political issues and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal
Church. She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Bruce P.
Randall, and two sons, Jack Randall and Bruce Holland Randall.

Carl Leo Schmitz Jr. ’82, age 46, of Midlothian, Va.,
passed away suddenly Aug. 23, 2006. Carl graduated from Langley
High School in Mclean, Augusta Military Academy, and received a
B.S. degree in Commerce with distinction from U.Va., where he
was a member of Chi Psi fraternity and the Raven Society. He was
a CPA and CFA and worked as an investment banker before his
retirement in 2003 after diagnosis with a malignant brain tumor.
Schmitz is survived by his wife of
24 years, Cynthia Showalter Schmitz ’82; his daughter, Kathryn; his son, Jacob; his
parents, Carl and Elizabeth Schmitz; his siblings
and their spouses, Sue Carter, William
Schmitz, Linda Crumpacker, and Eric
Schmitz; his parents-in-law, Lee and Janet
Showalter; sisters-in-law and their spouses,
Jennifer Haueis and Sarah Mays; as well as 11 nieces and
nephews. In lieu of flowers, Carl requested that donations be
made to the St. Michael’s Episcopal Church (Bon Air, Va.) Capital Campaign. (Published in The Washington Post)
Marcie Thomason ’03 died Aug. 27, 2006, in the crash of
Comair Flight 5191, at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Ky. An
Accountant in Washington, D.C., Thomason graduated with a degree
in accounting and Spanish. During her years in Charlottesville,
Thomason was a member of Delta Zeta sorority and an active
Madison House volunteer. Dean Carl Zeithaml told The Cavalier
Daily that Thomason was “a great asset to our community.” “I
remember that she was very involved, very engaged,” added
Zeithaml, who taught Thomason in the fall 2001 semester. “She
was always there ready to participate, involved in the class,
and was a great contributor to the classroom discussions and
